A site that makes a difference

SABMiller is one of the world’s largest brewers, operating in six continents, with more than 200 beer brands and some 70,000 employees worldwide.

Their site reflects their operational scale, business areas and diverse portfolio of brands. It links related information from across the business so that wherever users are on the site they can access a range of relevant content such as country profiles, brand stories, sustainable development case studies and management biographies. The site expresses and embodies how the different parts of SABMiller connect and co-operate to support the company's brand proposition, 'Making a difference through beer'.

Desiging with squares

The site was designed from scratch following a few simple rules laid out in the company's print styleguide. Page grid and layout were based on a square. Defining a new colour palette was a challenge since we wanted to reflect SAB's primary colour Gold truthfully without being overly bling. The site features a set of newly-created design elements including flags, maps and navigation tabs that help to guide users through the site and make connections between the different business areas.

Country profiles – showing scale of operations

SAB's operations stretch 75 countries. The company is working to build strong local businesss– in both emerging and developed markets – that contribute to their local economies. They have a strong believe in acting locally and responsibly. We therefore added a comprehensive section of country profiles to their corporate site: Each country profile documents vital statistics on its local brands, history, performance and latest CSR activities. We linked in another important thing: Responsible Drinking campaigns taking place in a country. SAB runs many campaigns worldwide encouraging responsible consumption of alcohol.

Sustainability reporting

SABMiller integrate sustainable development into the day to day management of their business through 10 priorities and measure their progress through their own reporting tool, called SAM. SAM stands for Sustainability Assessment Matrix.

The SAM reporting tool sets the standard for accountability in corporate responsibility (CR) reporting. It is a bespoke system for measuring and monitoring CR performance and allows users to see how the company has performed against their 10 sustainable development priorities.

The reporting tool is intuitive and easy to use with charts that clearly display performance by region or subsidiary, and over different years. Users can also click through to relevant CR information on the rest of the site. Interactivity was built in using Javascript. The interface uses colour coding to help distinguish the different continents and associated countries.
